I like being between the people and touch their lives some way or the other. It makes me feel nice to be remembered by someone while using my work. This can be a reason for many to make their work public.
Social Welfare
Well its the rarest but some might just want to give others something great to use just to share. This might be rare for some but i have seen a few developers who like to just take out time and build Roms for other people.
